Tahoe years and hitch shopping

Many Tahoes leave the factory with a receiver already welded in. Our live landers run from 1999 through 2020. On the shelf today, the standout rear Class 3 for a specific build is CURT 13161 for 2007–2014 Tahoes with the police package. Civilian years more often need a careful check of the factory hitch, then wiring, a ball mount, and sometimes a front receiver for a winch or bike-rack setup.

2007–2014 police package Class 3: CURT 13161. Rated up to 6,000 lb GTW and 600 lb tongue weight on the hitch card — still limited by Chevrolet’s rating. Built for Tahoes with the police package, not a generic civilian swap.
2015–2020 Front receiver: CURT 31073 for Suburban and Tahoe applications on the card. Rear aftermarket Class 3 for ordinary civilian Tahoes is not listed in our current CURT catalogue — inspect the factory receiver first.
1999–2006 Front receiver example: CURT 31302 for listed GM full-size applications. Early landers also reference related GM front receivers such as CURT 31042 where the card allows.
Wiring and brakes RV-style harness example: CURT 58966 for Suburban and Tahoe applications on the card. Brake-control harness example: CURT 51452 for listed Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC trucks and SUVs.

Never exceed Chevrolet’s tow rating for your trim, axle ratio, and tow package. A hitch rating is not a blank cheque to tow heavier than the SUV was designed for.

Simple setup steps

Step 1Open your year

Use the 1999–2020 landers above so you see what your Tahoe page actually lists.

Step 2Inspect the factory hitch

Many Tahoes already have a receiver. Measure the tube, check welds, and only then shop an aftermarket Class 3.

Step 3Match police-package notes

CURT 13161 is for 2007–2014 police-package Tahoes. Wrong package means wrong hitch.

Step 4Finish lights and WD

Use the wiring guide and the weight distribution guide when the trailer needs them.

  • Believe Chevrolet’s tow rating for your trim, axle, and tow package — it beats any hitch brochure.
  • Police package is a hard gate for CURT 13161 — do not guess from a badge alone.
  • Factory receivers are common on Tahoe — inspect before you buy a second rear hitch.
  • Plan for salt season — rinse receivers and protect wiring plugs through winter.
