Ram 1500 generations (quick map)

Hitch part numbers follow the frame and bumper — not just “it’s a Ram.” Classic (DS) and fifth-gen (DT) use different CURT SKUs. Use this map, then open your year page.

Generation Model years What to expect
DS (and Classic) 2009–2018 · Classic continues Class 3 options such as CURT 13374 and broader CURT 13333. Higher-capacity paths include Class 4 CURT 14361 and Class 5 CURT 15809 on select builds — confirm year and Classic vs DT.
DT (5th gen) 2019–2025 (+) New body. Class 3 with factory Class 3 bumper path: CURT 13419. Higher-capacity Class 5: CURT 15005. Brake-control harness example: CURT 51458.

Always verify year, cab, bed, Classic vs DT, and factory-receiver notes. Lowest rating among truck, hitch, ball mount, and trailer always wins.

Class 3 vs higher on a Ram 1500

Most common

Class 3 · 2" receiver

The everyday half-ton choice: boats, utility trailers, campers within truck ratings, plus bike racks and cargo carriers. Uses a 2" receiver. Often WD-capable within the hitch’s WD rating.

Step up

Class 4 / Class 5 · heavier duty

Choose Class 4 or 5 when trailer and truck ratings support higher weights and you want the hitch to match. DT example: CURT 15005.

  • Never exceed Ram’s tow and payload numbers for your powertrain
  • Heavier campers may need weight distribution — WD guide

Step 1Know your package

Factory tow packages may include a receiver, 7-way, and brake controller. Aftermarket builds need each piece planned.

Ball mount, pin, and ride height

  • After the receiver is on, level the trailer with the right drop or rise and ball size.
  • An unlevel trailer hurts stability and can overload the rear of the truck.
  • Read the ball mount guide and watch the CURT ball-mount video above.
  • Torque the hitch pin / clip (or lock) every trip.
  • Heavier travel trailers may need weight distribution — see the WD guide and sway control guide.
