Tonneau Covers Canada: Extang, UnderCover, Retrax and BAK

Tonneau cover buyer's guides

Tonneau coversKeep the bed dry and your gear out of sight

A tonneau cover turns an open pickup bed into a dry trunk, so rain and snow stay out and your tools stay out of sight when you park. We carry about 1,590 of them from Extang, UnderCover, Retrax and BAK, with TruXedo for a tighter budget, and every one ships free anywhere in Canada at the Canadian dollar price you see. What matters most is buying the one cut for your exact bed, because that is the only way it seals properly.

A tonneau guide for 15 pickups

Bed length and factory extras decide which cover fits, and every maker writes those measurements a little differently. That is why we wrote a separate guide for each of 15 pickups, from the Ford F-150 to the Nissan Titan, so you only see covers made for the bed you already have.

Brands

Extang, UnderCover, BAK and Retrax

Choosing a tonneau cover mostly comes down to how you want the bed to open. A soft folding cover costs the least and goes on fastest, a hard folding cover adds solid panels so the bed is harder to get into, and a retractable rolls up at the front of the bed so the whole bed opens at once. We stock all three.

Extang

Trifecta 2.0 and Solid Fold ALX

Extang's Trifecta 2.0 is a soft tri-fold in leather-grain vinyl that clamps to the bed rails and goes on in about five minutes, which makes it the quickest way to get a bed covered before the snow. It is $658 CAD for the Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado short boxes. Want hard panels from the same maker? The Solid Fold ALX is $1,820.

  • Soft tri-fold
  • Five-minute install
  • Hard Solid Fold too
UnderCover

Flex, Ultra Flex and Armor Flex

UnderCover builds hard folding covers whose panels fold up toward the cab, so you can drive with part of the bed open when a load is too tall to close over. The Ultra Flex adds a matte finish, rail lights for loading in the dark, and a tailgate seal that closes the gap at the back. Flex starts near $1,680 CAD, Ultra Flex is $1,820 to $1,890, and Armor Flex is $2,100.

  • Hard folding
  • Partial opening
  • Rail lights on Ultra Flex
BAK

BAKFlip MX4

The BAKFlip MX4 uses matte aluminum panels over a foam core, and its release only works with the tailgate down, which means locking the tailgate locks the whole bed. A tailgate seal closes the gap at the back so snow and rain stay out. It runs $1,820 to $1,890 CAD on the common half-ton and heavy-duty boxes.

  • Aluminum panels
  • Locks with the tailgate
  • Tailgate seal
Retrax

RetraxPRO MX and XR

RetraxPRO MX is a retractable cover made of powder-coated aluminum slats on sealed ball-bearing rollers, so it opens with one hand and rolls up out of the way at the front of the bed. Retrax rates it for more than 500 pounds spread across the lid, which counts after a heavy snowfall. The MX runs $3,220 to $3,360 CAD and the PRO XR is about $3,500.

  • Retractable
  • 500 lb rated
  • One-handed

On a tighter budget, the TruXedo TruXport is a soft roll-up at $490 CAD for the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Ram short boxes, and it sits on top of the rails with its tension already set at the factory. We also stock WeatherTech AlloyCover hard tri-folds from $1,546 CAD.

Fit

Three checks before you order

Start with a tape measure along the bed floor, from the front wall to the inside of the closed tailgate, because makers write the same box in different ways. Ford calls its short box the 5.5 ft bed while most cover makers list it as 5 ft 7 in. Same bed, two names.

Next, look at what is already on the bed. A RamBox, factory side storage boxes, deck rails or Utili-Track, and the GM CarbonPro bed each need a cover built for them, and the product title tells you when a cover fits one or skips it. Last, decide how you want it to open, then enter your year, make and model in EasySearch on the product page so you know it fits before it goes in the cart.

Winter

A dry bed all winter

A sealed cover keeps snow out of the bed all winter, so the shovel, the salt and the hockey bag are right where you left them instead of frozen to the floor of the box. Brush heavy snow off before you fold or roll the cover open so it does not slide into the bed, and clear the drain tubes on a retractable once things start to melt.

Examples

One cover from each maker

On the half-tons Canadians buy most, the Ram 1500, Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, a soft tri-fold starts around $658 CAD and a retractable runs past $3,200. Every one of these is cut for a single bed, so check the years and box length before you order.

Short answers

Tonneau cover questions

Do I have to drill the bed?

No. The folding and roll-up covers here clamp to the bed rails, which is why the Extang Trifecta 2.0 goes on in about five minutes without a single hole in the truck.

Will a hard cover hold snow?

Retrax rates the RetraxPRO MX for more than 500 pounds spread across the lid. Whatever cover you have, brush heavy snow off before you open it so it does not end up in the bed.

Is shipping really free?

Yes, every cover ships free anywhere in Canada, and the price you see is in Canadian dollars.
