What four-pin (four-flat) actually carries

Shoppers say “four-pin” and mean the common four-flat plug on light trailers. Those four circuits are ground, tail and running lights, left turn and brake, and right turn and brake. That is enough for many utility trailers, boat trailers without electric brakes, and small cargo trailers that only need the lights to work with the tow vehicle.

Four-flat does not carry a dedicated electric-brake signal, does not feed reverse lights on the trailer, and does not provide a battery charge or auxiliary power circuit. If your trailer only has the four lighting wires, four-flat is the honest match.

When seven-pin (seven-way) matters

Seven-way RV blade plugs add the circuits light-duty four-flat leaves out. In plain English, you reach for seven-way when the trailer needs one or more of these:

  • Electric trailer brakes controlled from a brake controller in the cab
  • Reverse or backup lights on the trailer
  • A 12-volt charge or auxiliary feed to a trailer battery or interior circuit

Many travel trailers, larger utility trailers with electric brakes, and RVs expect seven-way on the vehicle. The plug style alone does not install a brake controller — you still need the controller hardware and a vehicle that can support it. That decision lives on the brake-controller guide.

Step 3Name the missing circuits

Lights only? Four-flat can be enough. Brakes, reverse, or charge power? Plan seven-way and, when brakes are electric, a controller.

Step 4Test before the trip
