Towing

The hitch ball nut keeps the ball on the mount. Torque it to the value stamped in the ball instructions, use the correct lock washer or prevailing-torque nut, and recheck after the first loaded trip.

Match shank and hole

The ball shank must match the hole in the mount. A one-inch shank in a one-inch hole is correct. Do not stack random washers to fake a fit. Seat the shoulder squarely, install the washer stack the instructions show, then torque the nut.

Recheck under load

After the first loaded tow, verify the nut has not backed off. Replace a damaged lock washer. Keep threads clean of heavy rust before you reuse a ball. If the ball is worn flat or cracked, replace the ball — do not chase torque on worn hardware.
