Latch checklist
Lower the coupler onto the correct ball diameter until it seats. Close the latch fully. Install the latch pin or lock. Lift the coupler tongue with the jack slightly — it should not climb off the ball. Then cross the safety chains and plug in the lights.
Wear and grease
Flat spots on the coupler socket or a floppy latch mean replacement parts. Grease the socket if the trailer maker allows it. Canadian salt accelerates latch pivot wear — rinse and inspect each spring.
