A hitch pin keeps the mount in the receiver. The clip keeps the pin from walking out. Safety chains are the backup if the coupler ever leaves the ball. Use all three every tow — not just when the trailer looks heavy.

Pin and clip
Match pin diameter to the receiver holes. Seat the pin fully, then install the clip through the pin hole. Bent clips get replaced, not reused. A hitch lock can replace the plain pin when theft resistance matters.
Safety chain habits
Cross the chains under the coupler so they can cradle a dropped tongue. Leave enough slack to turn without binding, but not so much that the chains drag. Hook them to rated points on the hitch or vehicle, not to random bumper holes.
