When you need one
Spare tire carriers, some bike racks, and bumper-mounted gear that blocks a short shank. Measure twice — a longer extension is not automatically better.
Ratings
Read the extension capacity. Combine it with the hitch and accessory ratings and use the lowest number. Pin both junctions. Anti-rattle hardware helps long shanks from clunking.
