Hitch-mounted step
Pins or clamps into the trailer hitch hardware. CURT 31001 is a live step pad that fits a two inch receiver. CURT 45909 is a live adjustable hitch step that attaches to a CURT adjustable channel mount instead of filling the tube by itself. Both give a foothold for roof boxes, truck beds, or tall hatch lids when the hitch is free.

Bumper step
Bolts to the bumper or uses an OEM-style step pad on the bumper cover. It stays out of the receiver so you can still run a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. Load honesty still matters: a bumper step is for footing, not for hanging cargo weight that belongs on a rated hitch accessory.

If the step occupies the receiver, the ball mount comes out. Same story for most hitch bike racks and cargo carriers: one tube, one insert. Plan the day. Tow or haul on the hitch, or step on the hitch, not both at once unless you are using a channel-mount style step that shares a channel mount setup designed for that purpose.
CURT 45909 folds up when idle, which helps when you want the step nearby without leaving a pad sticking out. It still needs a compatible CURT adjustable channel mount, and that channel mount is a two inch style accessory on the live cards we stock. A Class 1 one and one quarter inch car hitch will not accept a two inch step pad without changing the whole accessory plan.

Load honesty without invented cutoffs
Live CURT cards publish their own step ratings. CURT 45909 lists about five hundred pounds maximum tongue weight capacity on the product card. CURT 31001 is a foothold pad on a two inch receiver, not a cargo carrier. We will not invent provincial legal cutoffs for when a bumper step or hitch step is required. Follow the vehicle manual, the step card, and common sense on wet Canadian steel and salted bumpers.
Ice and road salt make any rear foothold slick. Wipe the pad, wear sensible shoes, and do not treat a hitch step like a ladder for standing work over your head. If you need both bed access and a bike rack on the same weekend trip, a bumper step or running-board style step usually beats fighting the receiver.
