The two measurements
On level ground, measure from the ground to the inside top of the trailer coupler. Measure from the ground to the top inside of the receiver opening. The difference is your target drop or rise. Load the trailer as you tow before you measure — empty boats and empty campers lie.
Pick drop, rise, or adjustable
Fixed mounts are simple when your number is stable. Adjustable mounts help if you switch trailers. Many CURT mounts are reversible: one face is drop, flip for rise. Confirm ball-hole size and rating after you pick the height.
