If the coupler ever leaves the ball and the chains cannot keep the trailer with you, that cable should go taut and yank the pin. The switch then routes battery power straight to the electric brakes.
It is not a parking brake for everyday stops. It is not a substitute for a brake controller when you are towing normally. It is the last-resort circuit for a separation. That is why the battery on the trailer has to be charged, the switch has to be mounted solid, and the cable has to be clipped where it can actually pull free.
Electric trailer brakes need two things on a normal tow: a brake controller in the tow vehicle, and a good seven-way (or dedicated brake) circuit to the trailer. The breakaway switch taps the same brake wire on the trailer side, but it gets power from the trailer breakaway battery instead of the truck when the pin is pulled.
If your trailer uses surge (hydraulic) brakes only, a classic electric breakaway kit is not the same story — do not force an electric kit onto a surge coupler and call it done.
