Test the breakaway switch by pulling the pin in a controlled setting and confirming the trailer brakes apply. Reset the pin fully afterward. A switch that does nothing with a known-good battery needs replacement.

Safe test method

Chock the trailer. With the tow vehicle secured, pull the breakaway pin and listen or feel for brake application. Do not perform the first test of the year on a public ramp. Reseat the pin completely so the brakes release.

What failure looks like

No brake response with a charged battery points at the switch, wiring, or magnets. Intermittent response often means a corroded pin or a stretched cable that does not pull cleanly. Replace questionable switches before a long trip.
