What to inspect
Read the DOT date code. Many shops treat six to ten year old trailer tires as suspect even with tread left. Confirm cold pressure to the sidewall. Look for cracks in the sidewalls from sun and storage.
Mount and tools
Whether the spare lives under the trailer or on a hitch carrier, confirm the mount hardware is tight. Carry a jack and lug wrench that fit the trailer, not just the tow vehicle. Canadian winter storage still ages tires — check again in spring.
