The winch hook is the last link holding the boat to the trailer winch. Use a hook that latches on the bow eye, never stand in the strap line under load, and replace a stretched or cracked hook before it opens.

Hook engagement
Seat the hook fully in the bow eye with the latch closed if the design includes one. A partial catch can spit the hook when the bunks unload on a steep ramp. Keep fingers clear when tensioning.
Winch and safety chain
The winch holds the boat for loading. A bow safety chain or separate tie-down still matters for the highway. Inspect the winch mount bolts and the strap in the same visit as the hook.
