When a dedicated harness is not listed, or when the vehicle uses a combined stop and turn circuit that a standard trailer cannot read, a taillight converter becomes the practical bridge.
In plain counter talk: if the car already speaks trailer language through a module, buy the harness that matches the vehicle card. If the car combines brake and turn into one filament or one LED channel per side, the trailer still wants separate left and right turn wires. That is the job of a three-to-two style converter or a multi-function converter that can also handle pulse-width modulated factory lamps.
LED trailer lamps draw less current than old bulbs. Some older non-powered converters and flasher cans expect enough load to behave. If trailer LEDs hyperflash, stay dark, or confuse a converter, do not keep splicing blindly. Use a converter designed for modern vehicle outputs, confirm grounds, and pretest with a tester before you chase the trailer down the driveway. We will not invent a province-by-province rule about which lamp type you must run.
Factory LED taillights on the tow vehicle can also change which harness or converter is listed. When a product card says it excludes LED tails, believe the card. A powered converter with a clean battery feed is often more stable than hoping a non-powered unit will keep up with low-current or modulated circuits.
Most light-duty converters on this page end in a four-way flat for tail, ground, left turn, and right turn. That matches a simple utility trailer. A seven-way plug adds reverse, twelve-volt charge, and electric brake circuits. Converting three-wire vehicle lamps to two-wire trailer lamps does not automatically give you trailer brakes. Before you blame the converter, walk the trailer lights pretrip check. Confirm the vehicle lamps work, the plug is clean, and the trailer ground is solid at the frame.
