Symptom → first checks

No lights at all

Everything dark

  • Test the vehicle plug alone with a circuit tester (not only the trailer)
  • Confirm ground (white) on clean bare metal — bad grounds fake “dead harness” failures
  • Check vehicle fuses for trailer / tow circuits and any inline fuse on a powered converter
  • Inspect corroded 4-flat / 7-way pins, bent blades, and water in the socket
One side out

Left or right only

  • Verify turn + brake on that pin at the vehicle plug while a helper signals
  • On 4-flat: yellow ≈ left turn/brake, green ≈ right turn/brake, brown ≈ running, white ≈ ground
  • Check trailer side markers / bulbs / LED modules on the dark side
  • Look for chafed frame wiring where the dark-side circuit runs
Brake lights

Running OK, brakes not

  • On combined turn/brake vehicles, brake and turn share pins — converter issues show up here
  • Test brake function at the vehicle socket with the pedal down
  • Do not confuse electric trailer brakes (7-way blue / controller) with brake lights
  • If only the trailer fails, inspect trailer stop-lamp grounds and LED drivers

4-flat vs 7-way troubleshooting checklist

Check 4-flat 7-way
Isolate vehicle vs trailer Unplug trailer; test vehicle socket first. If vehicle is good, chase trailer wiring / lights.
Ground White wire to clean metal Same — plus inspect the ground blade for corrosion
Running lights Brown pin with headlights / markers on Running-light blade with markers on
Turn / brake Yellow left · green right Matching left / right blades; confirm with turn + brake
Extra circuits N/A (lights only) Blue = electric brakes · aux 12V · reverse — test only if equipped
Adapters 7→4 adapters pass lights only. A dangling adapter can hide bent pins — reseat and retest bare sockets.

Converter notes (when signals misbehave)

  • Independent or multiplex vehicle lighting often needs a converter so trailer turn/brake signals behave.
  • If running lights work but turns flash both sides or brakes do nothing, suspect the converter or its ground/power feed.
  • Powered converters need a solid 12V source and fuse — a dead fuse looks like a “bad harness.”
  • After install, retest with a plug-in tester before blaming the trailer.

Canada road & weather habits

  • Salt and spray corrode plugs — clean and dielectric-grease where the sheet allows.
  • Store the trailer plug cap closed when not towing.
  • After winter, retest lights before the first long trip.
  • Working trailer lamps are expected on Canadian highways — fix dark lights before you roll.
