How to measure

Use a dedicated tongue-weight scale, a commercial scale with a careful jack method, or a bathroom scale only for lighter tongues within the scale rating. Support the coupler at towing height. Measure with water, propane, and cargo where they will ride.

What to do with the number

Stay inside hitch, mount, and vehicle tongue ratings. If the number is high enough to unload the front axle, look at weight distribution. If it is too light and sway shows up, move cargo forward before you buy sway hardware. Recheck after big loading changes.
