What causes trailer sway?

  • Tongue weight too light (or loaded wrong): Cargo stacked far aft or a squatting rear reduces stability. Aim for a healthy tongue-weight percentage. Load heavy items forward of the trailer axles when you can.
  • Speed + crosswinds: Prairie gusts, mountain passes, and open corridors amplify small oscillations. Passing transports can start a fishtail.
  • Soft tires / wrong pressures: Check cold pressures to the tire and trailer placards before every long run.
  • Worn suspension or coupler play: Loose latches, tired springs, and an unlevel ball mount all add yaw.
  • Abrupt steering or braking: Sudden lane changes and trailer-brake mismatch can excite sway — especially without a properly adjusted brake controller on 7-way setups.
