Spring bars are the long arms on a weight-distribution hitch that push some tongue weight forward into the tow vehicle so the whole rig sits more level. A weight-distribution hitch is trying to take a heavy tongue load that squats the rear of the tow vehicle and lift some of that load forward so the front axle gets weight back. You are aiming for a more level side profile on both the tow vehicle and the trailer — not a perfectly flat spirit-level fantasy on uneven gravel.
Measure ride height at the same reference points before the trailer is hooked, after the coupler is down with bars loose, and again after the bars are loaded. Many CURT round-bar kits such as CURT 17050 and CURT 17051 use adjustable heads so you can set ball height first, then add bar tension. Trunnion-style kits such as CURT 17500 follow the same leveling idea with a different bar shape.

On chain-style spring bars, tightness is a load tool, not a toughness contest. Too little tension and the rear still squats. Too much and you can lift the rear too high, unload the front in the wrong way, fight the suspension, or make unhitching miserable. Follow the link count and torque notes in your CURT sheet for that kit — we are not inventing a universal “add two more links” rule here.
Load the trailer the way you actually travel: water, gear, and propane where they will ride. Then set bar tension. If one side needs a wildly different chain length than the other, stop and check for a twisted head, uneven L-brackets, or a trailer that is parked on a slope. Equal-ish chain engagement is a clue you are on a square setup.
Integrated systems and trunnion brackets do not always use dangling chains the same way. If your kit uses fixed brackets or cams, use that procedure instead of forcing a chain habit onto hardware that was never meant for it. Leave the driveway, then stop somewhere safe after the first stretch of road. Hardware settles. Soft suspension moves. A chain that looked perfect on the driveway can need one link of adjustment once the trailer is moving and the tires are warm.
Walk around: coupler latch, hitch pin and clip, spring-bar chains or brackets, safety chains, breakaway cable, and lights. Listen for clank that means a bar is not seated. Feel the steering — if the front still feels light, you may need a bit more bar load or a closer look at tongue weight. If the ride feels harsh and the rear looks jacked up, ease tension rather than adding more.
Re-check again after the first fuel stop on a longer trip, and any time you change cargo a lot. WD setup is not a one-and-done tattoo. It is a setup you verify when the load changes. Pair this habit with the first tow day checklist so lights and chains get the same attention as the bars.
